What have lemons and raspberries got to do with space?

Fun and interesting facts for International Astronomy Day

Not a lot of people know this, but the moon is actually lemon-shaped. I'm being serious! It might look round when we are gazing skywards, but the Moon is shaped like a lemon. It has flattened North and South poles and bulges on both sides around its equator. If you don't believe me, check out the Sky At Night. And as for raspberries, well, that's even more bizarre, because apparently clouds and gas at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy taste like raspberries and smell of rum. No-one can ever accuse me of writing boring blogs. You learn something new every time don't you?

When is International Astronomy Day?

I found out these interesting facts whilst researching International Astronomy Day which, unlike most special days, happens twice a year. A bit like the Queen's birthday then. This year International Astronomy Day is on May 7th and October 1st. The first date is closest to the first quarter moon of Spring and the second date closest to the first quarter moon in Autumn. So those are the interesting bits. Now we can move onto the fun stuff - how we can celebrate it.

What to do on International Astronomy Day

Looking for stars during the day might not be very fruitful. However, you could visit a planetarium, watch the original Star Wars trilogy, or dig out your Star Trek DVD box set to get yourself in the mood. Later on, the most obvious activity is stargazing. Get some fresh air while you enjoy gazing up at the starry skies, what could be better than that?

Stargazing from a hot tub

If you live out in the country, away from artificial street lighting and you own a wood-fired hot tub this has to be one of the best activities ever invented. Well, it's definitely top of my list of 'Reasons for owning your own hot tub'. And we know that lots of our happy customers feel the same way, because they're always telling us how wonderful it is!

We had our hot tub delivered a few weeks ago and we were very pleased with the service and advice from Nicola and Tim. We used the tub every day/evening before (sadly) coming back home to England. Can't wait until we return in the winter to do some star gazing in the bubbly, warm water! We would not hesitate to recommend Hot Tubs in France to any potential future customers. Gillian Robinson, Google Reviews

Stargazing is one of our favourite activities, especially in the winter when the nights are cold and the sky is clear. That's when the warm bubbling water is so inviting. When you look up at the vastness of the night sky, you can’t help but wonder if there is someone looking down at us from another galaxy, far, far away. The night sky really puts things into perspective doesn't it?

What are you looking at?

There are some great stargazing apps available now. Most of them will notify you when any special starry events are going to occur, such as meteor showers or the space station flying overhead. Most can be downloaded to your mobile phone so you can just lie back, look at the stars and try and identify which ones are the biggest and brightest.

Astronomy in France

If you are serious about astronomy then France has several special events you can take part in throughout the year, such as Les Nuits des étoiles and Le jour de la nuit.

There's also the Astrofarm in Confolens, if you fancy a couple of nights away in a "residential astronomy centre set in the glorious French countryside". (Can't see any mention of hot tub facilities on their website though. Perhaps I need to give them a call).
