If there is one Hot Tubs On Tour event that you do not want to miss this summer it's our July one. On Saturday 24th July our hosts are Charlotte and Glyn at the famous Mad Hatter's in Caunay, 79190.
Why is Mad Hatter's Kitchen famous? Because every August up until the pandemic, they hosted one of the most popular music festivals in the Deux-Sevres, with some very well-known headline acts. In previous years people and acts from all over Europe travelled here for the Wonderland music festivals. Great acts such as Slade, the Mystery Jets, Bootleg Beatles, Eddie & the Hot Rods, Dr Feelgood, Nick Harper, Will and the People, the Ultimate Eagles, the Fred Batista Trio... and many, many more.
Wonderland Hop
Because of COVID, and the fact that the events take months to arrange, it hasn't been possible for them to organise the festival this year. However, they are planning a smaller event and it sounds like it will be just as good. The Wonderland Hop is a weekend of music and food that takes place at Mad Hatter's on the 13th, 14th and 15th August 2021. It sounds like it will be great fun and we might even try and get along there ourselves!
What's happening on the 24th
Before that though, on Saturday 24th July we will be there with our trusty Burford Deluxe hot tub. People never fail to be impressed by it's sleek lines, and the super-simple cleaning and maintenance routines. The Burford looks at home in any environment, and I've no doubt that Mad Hatter's Kitchen, in a sleepy French hamlet on the outskirts of Caunay, will be no different. We'll be setting up in the beautiful restaurant grounds, and I'm hoping we'll get chance to have a wander round, feed the alpacas and have a chat with our hosts, to find out all about this popular bar, restaurant and events venue.
Home-grown produce
Charlotte has confirmed that the bar will be open all day, and lunch will be served from 12.30h to 14.30h. With tea, coffee and cakes served later in the afternoon from 15.00h to 17.00h.
Charlotte's dishes use fresh ingredients - a lot of them grown in their own kitchen garden! - and free range, organic eggs. I also have it on very good authority that she makes absolutely amazing cakes and pies. Note to self - grab a couple of slices before they're all gone.
With an emphasis on spontaneity and seasonal produce, our menus change all the time. Our menu descriptions are down to earth – we let the dishes do the talking!
The newly -tiled terrace looks great and would be the ideal place to relax with an aperitif (make mine a G&T), or for a light lunch.
"If music be the food of love, play on"
It was Shakespeare that wrote these famous words, and if he'd been describing Mad Hatter's then he'd have hit the nail on the head. They hold regular foodie events all year round, and the most popular ones are their music and bistro evenings. These are held outside in the courtyard, when the weather is warm. Or in the converted outbuilding (with fully functional bar), when the weather isn't so good. And talking about music, for the Hot Tubs On Tour event on the 24th there will be live music in the afternoon from the Mount Juliet Band.
Come and join in the fun

If you're worried about having a drink, then you can always stay over, because Mad Hatter's also provide accommodation. No excuse for not coming now, and you could stay and have one of Charlotte's amazing Sunday roasts the next day.
