Relax, Replenish and Read on World Book Day

I love a good book and whether it's reading on a Kindle, listening to an audio book or cradling a real book lovingly in your hands, the experience can be enhanced even more when you are doing it in the tub.

Soak away your troubles in a hot tub of bubbles

I can't tell you how long I have been waiting to find an opportune moment to use that phrase and with it being World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March now feels like the right time. Losing yourself in a good book while you are lazily languishing in the hot tub can help wash away all your worries, and transport you to another world.

Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life. - Mark Twain

Reading between the wines

Before we moved to France I ran a successful book club in the UK for over 10 years. We would meet up in each others houses or gardens and have a good open discussion about the book we were reading. There was always time for social chat too, and our book club motto was 'Reading between the wines'.

Having a glass of fizz with me while I'm reading my book in the tub, certainly adds to the relaxed mood, but more often than not, when I'm at a really enthralling point in the book, I'm oblivious to everything going on around me. I just keep on turning the pages!

What is World Book Day?

This year is the 25th Anniversary of World Book Day so if you haven't celebrated it before then this year is a good time to start. If you are worried about reading one of your favourite books in the hot tub, don't worry. There is an alternative - audiobooks are a brilliant way to enjoy a good book, whether it's with your family or listening in your own time. No risk of dropping your book or Kindle in the water either, because you can balance your device on the wine rack, plug in your headphones or put in on loudspeaker, slide back and relax. Listen to the dulcet tones of Sir Patrick Stewart or other celebrity narrators, personally reading to you while you're in the tub.

Bathing with a good book

If you use a Kindle or other tablet-size device for reading then how about getting an AquaReader? You can also use this for books as well and it's an inflatable that can hold all your reading material (except maybe newspapers!) safely in place and hands-free. Keeps everything afloat and nice and dry, just as long as you don't start splashing around and making waves. So I recommend not having the air bubble jets on if you are 'floating' your reading material.

Of course you could always just wrap your eReader or Kindle in a plastic bag. It may be a bit harder to read through the plastic wrapper, but you could always increase the font size. I think you can also buy waterproof covers for these products, but are they really 100% waterproof and would you risk it?

If you are not planning to have a long hot tub session then I find podcasts are another good way to relax and listen, and even learn something new. However, because there are so many to choose from it's best to get a few recommendations, and you'll find something for everyone in the link below.

I think James Bond had the right idea, although maybe I'd ditch the phone, because hot tub heaven is all about having quality 'me time'.
